In Think Again, Adam Grant introduces the idea of re-thinking. Re-thinking everything from our work life, personal life and even the way we process our thoughts. We are often stuck in our old habits and thinking, that we fail to recognize our own potential due to our self-imposed limitations. In a wold where many claim to know more than they actually do and exhibit over-confidence, Grant discusses the Dunning-Kruger effect, a cognitive bias which causes people to overestimate their knowledge or ability, when in fact they know very little about. How many times in our daily lives do we come across it? We often recognize it in other people, but how often do we recognize our own over-confidence? As Dunning himself stated “the first rule of the Dunning Kruger club is you don’t know you’re a member of the Dunning-Kruger club.”
Listening to Adam Grant explaining the struggles we face and introducing new ways to re-think and re-learn, allowed me to really open my mind to see things different in both my personal and professional life. He explains how to de-teach one’s self from one’s own thinking and to adopt a scientific mindset. A scientific mindset is one where we keep an open mind and are able to change our minds with new evidence. Think Again is a very interesting and important read, especially now where world is rapidly changing.
